AUCKLAND - ROTORUA
(234km/146miles, 3hours 35mins)
Follow the Thermal Explorer Highway from Auckland to Rotorua
along State Highway 1, passing through Hamilton and Cambridge in
the Waikato region in your Budget Campers Motor Home Rentals.
Hamilton city is the main centre in the Waikato region. An
activity option is to view the mighty Waikato River from the deck
of the paddle steamer, the MV Waipa Delta, departing from
Hamilton city. An interesting commentary will tell visitors about
local landmarks, the history of the region and riverbank life.
Hamilton is well known for its themed gardens and the local
zoo, which has the largest free-flight aviary in the Southern
Hemisphere - an excellent chance for visitors to acquaint
themselves with some of New Zealand's distinctive native birds.
Visit the Waikato Museum of Art and History on the banks of the
Waikato River and check out the south end of Hamilton's main
street, buzzing with restaurants, cafes and bars.
Cambridge, 20 minutes further south of Hamilton, is the
centre of the equestrian and New Zealand thoroughbred industry.
Visit Cambridge Thoroughbred Lodge and experience New Zealand's
only 'Horse Magic Show'. The town of Cambridge is also well known
for its art and craft and antique shopping.

An alternative route for those wanting less traffic is to
turn off at Pokeno onto State Highway 2 and then State Highway
27.
Arrive in Rotorua late afternoon and check into accommodation
for two nights.
Rotorua is one of the original tourist destinations in New
Zealand, and has a long history of welcoming visitors. From the
moment people arrive in Rotorua they know they're somewhere quite
different. At nearby geothermal hotspots there are geysers
spouting, mud pools bubbling and belching and warm geothermal
springs and ponds that create a kaleidoscope of colour.
In the evening, entertainment could include a Maori cultural
performance or a swim in a hot mineral pool to relax and unwind
after a busy day.
