MASTERTON - WELLINGTON via
Pahiatua Track, SH57 and SH1 (246km/153miles, 3hours approx)
This morning take an alternative route back to Wellington.
Head north on State Highway 2 through Masterton to the Mt Bruce

rainforest, this is a centre for the New Zealand Department of
Conservation's captive breeding of threatened bird species. Take
a walk with a professional conservation officer past natural bush
aviaries.
Continue the journey north and travel through the Manawatu Gorge
on the Pahiatua Track road (turn-off at Pahiatua) and on to the
Kapiti Coast via State Highway 57. The Kapiti Coast stretches
with pleasant sandy beaches along the Tasman Sea from Otaki to
Paekakariki 30 km south, with the majestic backdrop of Kapiti
Island, a nature reserve, to the west.

include:

- For the adventurous, a Fly
By Wire ride where visitors are the pilot of the
world's first adventure ride offering full pilot control
of a high-speed, tethered plane. Suspension from overhead

up to 120 km per hour!
For those with additional
time in the Kapiti Coast area activities include:
- Kapiti Island, an
internationally important reserve for some of the world's
most endangered birds. Covered in dense native bush, the
reserve is now free from predators. Bird and plant life
is responding to the opportunity this provides. A
30-minute boat ride takes visitors to this unique Island
for an insight into how New Zealand looked before mankind
arrived.
- Visitors must pre-arrange a
permit and transport to the Island from the Kapiti Coast
Visitor Information Centre. Contact the Kapiti Coast
