North Island
PAIHIA - WHANGAREI
(71km/44miles, 1hour 15mins)
Depart the Bay of Islands heading
south to Whangarei driving your Budget Backpacker. At Hikurangi turn
onto the loop road to discover the Tutukaka Coast. Tutukaka is
the gateway to the Poor Knights Islands (23 km/14 miles off the
coast). These Islands are a wildlife reserve above water and a
marine reserve below, providing a unique range of flora, fauna
and fish in a dramatic setting.
To take advantage of this marine area it is recommended
visitors stay additional nights to:
- Dive or snorkel in the
Poor Knights Islands marine reserve: dive trips leave
from Tutukaka. The latest attraction is an artificial
reef created by the sinking of the ex-naval ship Freedom
- Go big-game fishing.
Boats depart from Tutukaka wharf. Bookings required
- Explore the many bays and
beaches of the Tutukaka coast: beyond Tutukaka is
some of the most picturesque coastal scenery in the
country - Matapouri, Woolleys Bay and Sandy Bay are
popular beach and surf playgrounds
- Walk tracks to such gems
as Whale Bay: there are dozens of interesting nooks,
crannies and lookout points among magnificent pohutukawa
trees
From Tutukaka continue to
Whangarei city. Whangarei enjoys more than 2000 hours of sunshine
a year, and there's rainfall enough to keep surroundings lush,
green and attractively semi-tropical. Visit Quayside at the Town
Basin in the heart of Whangarei for eating and entertainment and
to browse the museums (the Clock Museum and Museum of Fishes),
art galleries and specialty shops that line the waterfront.
Other afternoon activities could include:
- Visiting Whangarei Falls
- A trip to Bream Head
Scenic Reserve, Whangarei Heads - an outstanding
walkway with magnificent coastal and harbour panoramas,
through superb native forest
- Flightseeing and harbour
cruises to get a feel for the beautiful scenery
Overnight in the Whangarei
district.
