North Island

ROTORUA - TAUPO (80km/50miles, 1hour 20mins)

Depart Rotorua in your Budget Camper for a short journey through to the Lake Taupo region on State Highway 5. If time allows, stop at Orakei Korako thermal area. Access to Orakei Korako is by boat and the average sightseeing time is about one hour.

Taupo is the main centre in the region and Lake Taupo is also one of the North Island's most popular holiday destinations, both in summer and in winter. Arrive in Taupo by midday to allow plenty of time to see the many attractions in this area. Overnight in Taupo.

Options include experiencing Taupo's geothermal points of interest:

  • Thermal baths: a number of hot pool complexes have been developed for visitors, to take advantage of the natural hot water
  • Wairakei Geothermal Visitor Centre: see displays and audio-visuals of the Wairakei and Ohaaki geothermal power schemes
  • Volcanic Activity Centre: displays and audio-visual presentations of the Taupo volcanic zone
  • Prawn Park hatchery: tour the geothermal hatchery then head to the restaurant for a meal of prawns

Visitors can also get out on Lake Taupo and the surrounding rivers:

  • Boating on Lake Taupo: hire a boat or take a scheduled cruise
  • Bungy jump: leap over the Waikato River
  • Cherry Island trout sanctuary and restaurant, on the Waikato River
  • Huka Falls: take a jet boat ride or river boat cruise to the base of the falls
  • Scenic flights: get a bird's eye view over the area, including Mt Ruapehu
  • Trout fishing: charter an excursion to catch the elusive rainbow or brown trout on Lake Taupo, or go fly fishing with a local guide up one of the many rivers in the area
  • Huka Falls: watch as over 200,000 litres/44,000 gallons of water fall over the cliff face every second

OR alternatively there are a number of walks around Taupo and also in Pureora Forest Park, just one hour from Taupo:

  • Craters of the Moon (six kilometres north of Taupo): the highlights of this one-hour walk are the active thermal areas with lots of mud pools, hot pools and steam
  • Huka Falls to Aratiatia Rapids: this four-hour return trip starts at Huka Falls, 1.6 kilometres north of Taupo. Highlights include magnificent views of the River and flora and fauna
  • Mt Pureora Walking Track: enjoy a 2.5-hour return trip with views of Lake Taupo and Mt Ruapehu
