WAITOMO CAVES - AUCKLAND (200km/124miles, 3hours 10mins)

This morning depart in your Budget Campers Motor Home Rentals to Waitomo on State Highway 3 to Hamilton, and then link up with State Highway 1 for the journey back to Auckland. En route visitors' options include the Otorohanga Kiwi House and aviary, where New Zealand's native flightless bird and national symbol - the kiwi - is bred in captivity

On arrival in Auckland, afternoon activity options include:

A visit to Rangitoto Island or Waiheke Island - a short journey by ferry from downtown Auckland

  • Rangitoto Island is an inactive volcano only 600 years old. Visitors can hike to the 260 metre-high summit and take in 360-degree views of the Hauraki Gulf, or take the 4WD road train to the top. The Island also has lava caves, unique rock formations and pohutukawa forests for visitors to enjoy
  • Waiheke Island is home to many New Zealand artists. Self-drive art trails as well as guided tours enable visitors to see the work of many New Zealand artists who have made this Island home. Vineyard experiences are also an option on Waiheke Island. Activities such as horse riding or kayaking are also available. Spend the night on Waiheke or have dinner at one of the restaurants on the Island and catch the late ferry back to the city. www.waiheke.co.nz
