North Island
WHANGAREI - PAIHIA
(71km/44miles, 1hour 15mins)
Head north in your Budget Campers Motor Home Rentals on State Highway 1 to
Paihia. Blessed with shimmering safe waters and superb beaches,
Paihia is a good base for exploring the Bay of Islands. The
natural beauty of the Bay of Islands has to be seen to be
believed. It's an aquatic playground lavishly furnished with 144
islands and a myriad of secluded beaches.
Nearby Waitangi is one of New Zealand's most historic sites,
being the place where both Maori and European joined in signing
the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. The Treaty House stands proudly
in a vast, peaceful estate. Included is a fully carved Maori
meeting house, one of the largest Maori war canoes and a superb
visitor centre and gallery. This estate is a must-see for any
visitor interested in New Zealand's history and culture.
Catch a ferry to Russell (either passenger from Paihia wharf
or vehicular ferry from nearby Opua) and wander the village,
visiting historic buildings and art galleries. Lunch in a
waterfront cafe. It is hard to believe that Russell was known as
'the hell hole of the Pacific' when it was the shore leave
destination for sailors, whalers and traders during the 19th
century.
Historic buildings include:
- Pompallier House, an
original rammed-earth Catholic Missionary House
- Christ Church, which
still has original bullet holes from the early
Maori/European wars in the area
Return to Paihia by ferry or stay
in Russell for the rest of the day.
Visitors able to stay in the Bay of Islands for
additional days can choose from the following attractions and
activities:
- Cruising, swimming with
dolphins, sailing, big-game fishing and kayaking: the
Bay of Islands is a historic and maritime park
- Rainbow Warrior: dive
to the site of the sunken Greenpeace flagship. Trips
depart from Paihia and Matauri Bay
- Cape Brett Track: walk
the Track - eight hours one way (there's a water taxi
service for exiting). Bookings for huts along the Track
are required through the Russell Department of
Conservation office
Cape Reinga: join a day
trip to one of New Zealand's northernmost points, and Ninety Mile
Beach in the Far North
